What Does the Word Counter Measure?

This tool goes beyond a basic word count. Paste or type your text and get a full breakdown of your writing, words, characters, readability, platform fit, and more, all updating live without clicking anything. Need to count words in a PDF instead? Our PDF Word Counter handles that without any upload to a server. If your text also needs cleanup, ALL CAPS, inconsistent capitalization, or a different naming convention, our Case Converter handles that in the same browser-based, no-upload way.

Words and Characters

Your word count and character count update instantly as you type. Character count is shown two ways: with spaces included and without. This matters for platforms like Twitter/X or Google meta tags where every character counts toward a hard limit.

Sentences and Paragraphs

Every sentence and paragraph is detected and counted automatically. Sentence count helps you gauge writing rhythm, too many long sentences can hurt readability. Paragraph count is useful when formatting for web, where shorter paragraphs improve scannability.

Average Words per Sentence

This shows your average sentence length, calculated by dividing total words by total sentences. A lower average (10–15 words) reads faster and suits web or social content. A higher average (20+ words) suits academic or technical writing. This number is also one of the core inputs behind your Flesch Reading Ease score below.

Total Line Breaks

Each line break is counted separately from paragraph breaks. Useful for poets, screenwriters, and lyricists where line structure is part of the work itself, not just formatting.

Estimated Reading Time

Calculated at 250 words per minute, a commonly used estimate for average adult silent reading pace. Use this before publishing blog posts, articles, or email newsletters to set accurate reader expectations. (Note: the largest peer-reviewed meta-analysis on reading speed, Brysbaert 2019, puts the real adult average closer to 238 wpm, the long-cited 250–300 wpm figures are rounder but less precise. Worth knowing if you want this section to cite the most current research.)

Speaking Time

Calculated at 130 words per minute, a natural delivery pace that accounts for pauses and emphasis. Use this when writing speeches, presentations, or video scripts so you know your runtime before rehearsal.

Reading Level (Flesch Reading Ease Formula)

An industry-standard formula that scores your text from 0 to 100. Higher scores mean easier reading. A score of 60–70 suits general web audiences. Below 30 is academic or legal territory, not for general content.

Score Range Reading Level Difficulty
90–100 5th grade Very Easy
80–90 6th grade Easy
70–80 7th grade Fairly easy
60–70 8th–9th grade Standard
50–60 10th–12th grade Fairly difficult
30–50 College Difficult
10–30 College graduate Very Difficult
≤10 Professional Extremely difficult

The standard Flesch scale uses US grade levels like “5th grade” or “10th–12th grade,” which are not meaningful to most international readers. This tool uses globally recognised education levels instead: Primary School, Middle School, High School, College, Graduate, and Professional.

Score Range Reading Level Difficulty
90–100 Primary School Very easy to read, suitable for all audiences
70–90 Middle School Easy to read, good for general web content
50–70 High School Standard difficulty, suits most readers
30–50 College Fairly difficult, better for informed audiences
10–30 Graduate Difficult, suitable for academic content
≤10 Professional Very difficult, legal or technical territory

Browser-Based Processing

Your text never leaves your device. Everything is calculated locally in your browser, nothing is sent to any server, stored, or logged. No account required.

Upload and Download

Upload a TXT or DOCX file to analyze its content instantly, or download your current text as a TXT or DOCX file once you’re done. Need to count words in a PDF instead? Try our PDF Word Counter. Like everything else in this tool, file processing happens entirely in your browser — your file is never sent to a server.

How This Tool Counts: The Logic Behind Every Number

Word counters can give different results depending on how they handle edge cases. Here is exactly how this tool is programmed so you know what you are getting.

Hyphenated Words Count as One

Words joined by a hyphen, such as well-being, follow-up, or mother-in-law, are counted as a single word. This follows the standard editorial convention used by most style guides including AP and Chicago.

Two Consecutive Line Breaks Define a New Paragraph

A paragraph is counted each time two or more line breaks appear in sequence. A single line break does not start a new paragraph. This matches standard web content formatting behaviour.

Line Breaks Are Not Counted as Characters

A line break (pressing Enter) does not add to your character count. Some tools count each line break as a character, which can silently inflate your character count. This tool counts only visible characters, letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces.

Short Abbreviations Do Not Count as Sentences

Common abbreviations like Dr., Mr., Miss., and Prof. are not counted as sentence endings even though they contain a period. We’ve included a comprehensive list of abbreviations that are excluded from sentence counting.

Test the tool’s accuracy

Mr. John Smith and Dr. Emily Carter met at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday to discuss the Q3 report. The findings were surprising, e.g., revenue dropped by 23.5% despite a 12% increase in customer acquisition. Dr. Carter noted that Prof. Williams had predicted this outcome in his 2019 paper.

The team proposed three solutions: first, reduce operational costs by approx. 15%; second, renegotiate contracts with vendors (Inc. GlobalSupply and TechCorp Ltd.); third, launch a new product line by Q4.

Mrs. Henderson, the CFO, agreed vs. the board’s initial reluctance. However, the road ahead is uncertain. Will the company survive? Can they adapt fast enough! Only time will tell.

Platform Writing Guidelines

Every platform has a different ideal content length. The milestone bar in the tool shows you where you stand across all of these in real time as you type.

Platform Ideal Length Hard Limit
Instagram Caption Up to 150 characters 2,200 characters
Facebook Post Around 250 characters 63,206 characters
X (Twitter) 240 characters recommended 280 characters
LinkedIn Post 300-char hook + 1,200–1,600 words 3,000 characters
Blog Post (SEO) 1,500–2,500 words No limit
Google Meta Description 150–160 characters ~160 characters
Google Title Tag 50–60 characters ~60 characters

Why These Numbers Matter

Instagram truncates captions after 125 characters in the feed, anything beyond that is hidden behind a “more” tap. Facebook posts under 250 characters get more organic reach on average.

X hard-cuts at 280 with no overflow. LinkedIn rewards long-form thought leadership content but needs a strong short hook to stop the scroll. Blog posts above 1,500 words consistently outperform shorter content in Google search rankings.

How to Use the Word Counter

  6. Export your work. Download the finished text as a TXT or DOCX file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is your total word count divided by an average reading pace of 250 words per minute, then rounded to the nearest minute. It’s an estimate meant for planning publish-ready content, not a precise measurement of any individual reader.

What’s the difference between reading time and speaking time?

Reading time estimates how long it takes to silently read your text (250 wpm). Speaking time estimates how long it takes to deliver it out loud (130 wpm), accounting for the natural pauses, emphasis, and slower pace of spoken delivery. Use speaking time for scripts, speeches, and presentations.

What is Flesch Reading Ease and how is it calculated?

Flesch Reading Ease is a widely used readability formula that scores text from 0 to 100 based on average sentence length and average syllables per word. Shorter sentences and simpler words score higher, meaning easier to read. It was developed for English and doesn’t translate directly to other languages.

Does character count include spaces?

This tool shows both. Character count with spaces is the total length of your text as typed, useful for X posts or meta descriptions with hard character limits. Character count without spaces excludes whitespace, useful when a platform’s limit only counts visible characters.

Are hyphenated words counted as one word or two?

One. Words like well-being or follow-up count as a single word, matching the editorial convention used by AP and Chicago style guides.

Why does my sentence count look higher or lower than expected?

The most common cause is abbreviations. Titles like Dr. and Mr., or short forms like e.g. and approx., contain periods that naive counters mistake for sentence endings. This tool recognizes common abbreviations and excludes them from the sentence count.

Does this tool store or upload my text?

No. Every calculation, including file uploads, runs locally in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, stored, or logged, and no account is required.

What’s a good word count for an SEO blog post?

Most well-ranking blog posts fall between 1,500 and 2,500 words, though this varies heavily by topic and search intent, longer isn’t automatically better if it doesn’t fully answer the query. Use the milestone bar to track your progress against this range as you write.
